Milkins On Q for China

Rob Milkins, Gloucester favourite

Gloucester’s Robert Milkins, based at the South West Snooker Academy in Quedgeley, will be jetting off to Hainan in China this weekend to compete in the 2012 Haikou World Open Snooker.

Milkins booked his trip courtesy of wins over Sam Craigie and a 5-0 trouncing of Welshman Ryan Day.

Gloucester’s highest ranked professional faces Thailand’s Thanawat Tirapongpaiboon in a wildcard round, with reward for victory being a match up against German Masters finalist Stephen Maguire.

At just seventeen years old, Thanawat became the youngest professional to compile a tournament 147 break last season.

Milkins is joined on the trip by Dominic Dale, now resident in Stroud, who is also based at the World Snooker Centre of Excellence on the Waterwells Business Park.

Dominic Dale

Dale, a former winner of the Shanghai Masters, is a popular figure in China and along with Milkins, is in constant demand on the exhibition circuit in the Far East.

Sam Baird, who shot to fame in the Welsh Open last week, when he reached the televised stages in Newport, is from Devon, but uses the Academy as his permanent practice base, and he joins his colleagues on the plane to China.

He will have to get past China’s Jin Long in the Wildcard round to book the dream tie against newly crowned Welsh Open Champion Ding Junhui.

It is estimated that the match will be watched by up to 1 billion people on Chinese TV.

But before that, the South West Snooker Academy is packed full of the players putting in their final practice ahead of the China Open qualifiers, which take place in Sheffield this week.

Qualification would see the players fly out to Beijing at the end of March.

There are a total of nineteen On Q Promotions Ltd professionals in the event, many of whom are based at the Academy.

Sam Baird, along with Adam Wicheard, who also made his televised deubt in the Welsh Open last week, face Tian Pengfei and Sam Craigie respectively, in the opening round.

Robert Milkins sets out in round three, needing two wins to qualify, while Dominic Dale has one qualifying match.

Both players will watch and wait for results before knowing who they will play.

Milkins is another popular figure in the Far East. On his last trip Milkins stayed on for another week, fulfilling a round of exhibition matches and appearances.

Terry Griffiths working with Junior players

The world number thirty-five has also been working closely with Academy Director of coaching Terry Griffiths.

“I’ve really enjoyed my talks with Terry,” commented Milkins. “We have a chat before tournaments and after matches. his knowledge is amazing and it’s really helped me.”

Griffiths is not only on hand to work with the professionals but is coordinating a project at South West Snooker Academy, with the aim of finding a future star from Gloucestershire.

The former World Champion, widely acknowledged as the World’s leading coach, has been visiting schools in the county and oversees Schools Trips to the Academy.

After School and Junior clubs are in place at the Academy and keen pupils can practice in the professional conditions and receive coaching and structured lessons.

Griffiths is available to visit more schools in the area and schools are invited to contact the Academy on 01452 223214 for further information.

The Finn, The Welshman, The Indian and The Pole

Daniel Wells

The first night of the UK Championships at South West Snooker Academy, saw two preliminary round matches featuring players from Finland, Wales, India and Poland.

Wales and Finland emerged victorious as Daniel Wells swept to a 6-0 win over Kacper Filipiak and Robin Hull beat Lucky Vatnani 6-4.

Wells has been desparate to put a win on the board this season and after snatching the opening frame from behind, he was in control for most of the match.

Filipiak, not sixteen until later this month, had a great chance in the third, when he opened with 57, but he broke down and let Wells in to steal the frame. After that it was vitually one way traffic.

Wells goes through to beat his fellow Neath player Michael White in Round One.

Robin Hull

Finland’s Robin Hull has been beset by illness and injury in the past few seasons but he soon shook off any cobwebs with breaks of 53, 62 and 61 in the first three frames.

Vatnani, also plagued by problems this season, in his case Visa issues, countered with runs of 50 and 111 to take them to 2-2 at the interval.

Hull snatched the fifth on the black after a run of 48, Vatnani responded to take the next on the colours.

The Finn ran in 40 and 53 to regain the lead at 4-3 before Vatani won a low scoring eighth frame.

At last Hull broke the deadlock as breaks of 39 and 49 saw him to a 6-4 win.

Hull progresses to face China’s Yu Delu in Round One

Preliminary Round
Daniel Wells 6-0 Kacper Filipiak

West Midlands Claim UK League Title

Victorious West Midlands Team

“The third UK League Snooker Championship took take place over the weekend of 22-23 October at the South West Snooker Academy in Quedgeley and snooker league teams from all over the country (see Group photo) were there to do battle.

The Gloucester Snooker League were represented by (Glos Team photo L/R) Ben Wall, Craig Scotford (Capt.), Paul Williams, Tom Johnson and Nick Pearce.

Gloucester League Team

The team were unbeaten in their group and qualified for a deserved semi-final place. Gloucester had played exceptionally well in their group stage having won all 7 matches with a total 35 points, including a 3-2 win over the West Midlands Snooker League who were to become the eventual champions.

On the second day of the tournament, the Warrington League Team failed to show for unknown reasons but a Radstock League Team who came along to watch – (without their cues and glasses!) – found themselves playing, joined by other players from the Plymouth League and Academy Manager, John Redfern.

Ormskirk defended their title right up to the final.

They took the place of Warrington in the competition, which helped overcome the problem left by the Warrington League withdrawal!

In the semi-final however, Gloucester lost out to last year’s champions, the Ormskirk Snooker League team, who proved to be very strong opponents.

The Forest of Dean Snooker League “A” Team had also played well in their group with a total of 25 points, winning 6 out 7 of their matches and were joint leaders with Ormskirk, going into the semi-final stage where they were beaten by the West Midlands Snooker League.

In the final, the West Midlands team were on top of their game and beat Ormskirk comfortably 3-0, with some good match play and break building.

West of England Snooker Foundation post match comments:
Hi all, we would just like to say how much all the players from the West of England Snooker Foundation enjoyed the weekend, and many thanks to Richard and John for putting together a brilliant tournament.

The South West Snooker Academy is a superb venue and I think it is fantastic that we were able to play there. Congratulations to the West Midlands team and we certainly hope to enter again next year.

West Midlands Snooker League post match comments:
Hi all, I can only endorse previous comments regarding the South West Academy, it is a great venue. Richard, John and all the staff efficiently contributed to a most enjoyable experience.

Team West Midlands are grateful to be the winners, although bettered by Gloucester in the Group. Ormskirk also excelled during the event and are worthy opponents.

The overall standard was very good considering most players had little experience of playing on quality baize.

We eagerly look forward to next year’s event and expect another tough challenge.
Colin James – Staffs & West Midlands League

Ormskirk Snooker League post match comments:
Hello everyone, I would like to make a few comments on behalf of the Ormskirk League and its players representing it.

Firstly, I would like to thank and congratulate Richard Ormiston & John Redfern on a superb weekend in competing in the 3rd running of the UK League Snooker Tournament, Richard did a fantastic job, as usual, in his organisation of a super event which was, yet again, made difficult by Warrington not turning up for the second day but he sorted things out with no fuss at all. Well done mate !!!

I would also like to thank John, as well for his running of such a fabulous set-up at the academy and their hospitality to all the teams, the conditions were superb and couldn’t be better.

Congratulations to West Midlands for winning this year’s renewal, they played some fine snooker and to all the other teams who made the tournament a huge success.

I would finally like to say that our Ormskirk team put up an admirable defence of the trophy and we will be looking to prevail next year, our team all enjoyed the weekend very much and are already looking forward to next year !!

Thanks again Richard & John, it wouldn’t have happened without your hard work !!
Barry Addlington – Ormskirk Snooker League

Gloucester Snooker League post match comments:
On behalf of the SW Snooker Academy and the Gloucester Snooker League we would like to congratulate the West Midlands Snooker League team… in becoming the 2011 UK League Snooker Champions!

We would also like to thank all the leagues/players that took part… especially the Radstock League who came along to watch and then found themselves playing!

The Gloucester team also appreciated the spirit and friendship the matches were played in… again, special thanks to Southport who cooperated when a Gloucester Player’s tip came off and when and when extenda rest was loaned to play a particularly difficult shot.

We hope that all the leagues had a great weekend and we look forward to next year when hopefully the championship will take place here again.
John Redfern – Gloucester Snooker League
